2007 Dorsey Hughes Symposium
The response to the
2007 Dorsey Hughes Symposium was overwhelmingly positive. The Symposium,
held in Beaver Creek, focused on the interest groups driving health
care reform – including
state and federal governments, consumers, businesses and health
care providers.
Highlights of last year’s Symposium include presentations
from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, whose personal journey
to improve his own health inspired significant changes in Arkansas’ health
programs; Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter who outlined the health policy
challenges facing our own state; and Susan Dentzer of PBS’ “NewsHour
with Jim Lehrer” who summarized the plethora of current policy
initiatives under consideration. Of particular note were Wal-Mart
Executive Vice President Linda Dillman and Rev. Hurmon Hamilton,
Jr. Dillman focused on her company’s little-known emphasis
on insurance coverage and other health-related programs Wal-Mart
offers its employees, while Rev. Hamilton gave a very inspirational
speech about Massachusetts’ grassroots program to provide
health insurance for all its citizens.
If you missed last year’s Symposium, you can listen to several
outtakes through our Web site’s audio

slides used by many
of the presenters.
The 2007 Symposium also served as the forum to kick off the Fellows
program.
The goal of the Fellows Program is to cultivate leaders interested
in and willing to work toward improving health and health care
in Colorado. Representing business, nonprofit advocates, government
and health care providers, 19 individuals were selected to attend
the Foundation’s 2007 Symposium.
