Health Workforce

We invest in training and recruiting health professionals to deliver integrated primary care with the goal of improving access and quality for Coloradans. Research shows that primary care is less expensive and delivers equal or better outcomes than specialty care alone. Primary care providers can include family physicians, internists, pediatricians, obstetricians/gynecologists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Currently, there is a shortage of primary care professionals (as well as mental and oral health providers) at a national and state level — particularly in underserved areas. The shortage is compounded by an increasing demand for health services and declining interest in primary care careers.

To improve recruitment and retention of primary care health professionals throughout the state, the Foundation devotes a portion of its assets to medical education programs.

We fund physician training that educates physicians to provide integrated care and work in team-based, patient-centered medical homes.

In addition to medical education programs, the Foundation invests in nonprofits that attract and train health professionals as one of its seven Funding Strategies.
