Symposium Agenda

2012 Colorado Health Symposium
Health Equity: Bridging the Divides
With an emphasis on innovation and real-world solutions, the Colorado Health Symposium features fresh perspectives and new ideas from national thought leaders in health and health care. Set in beautiful Keystone, Colo., this annual event is regarded as one of the most widely discussed health policy conferences in the country.

The theme for the 2012 Colorado Health Symposium, “Health Equity: Bridging the Divides,” set the tone for a more equitable future. The three-day conference challenged presenters and participants to define opportunities for greater affordability, access and choice, resulting in enhanced productivity, reduced health costs and ultimately improved lives.

Morning Session
What Price Health?
We hear statistics about the ever-increasing (and unsustainable) cost of health care through economists, legislators, health providers, commentators and others. But what are the implications for individuals, families and whole communities when rising costs and tough economic times push people to the health care margins? What does "reasonable cost" mean when it comes to health? Conversely, what are the costs to all of us when people become and remain unhealthy? We explore answers to these questions and set the stage for a deeper discussion about what health equity means during this opening plenary session.

Health Equity through Diversity and Inclusiveness: Starting the Journey
Diversity and inclusiveness are key drivers of innovation and critical components for an organization to achieve its mission. They are also areas that can create apprehension and uncertainty for management, staff and those being served. What is the difference between doing diversity work and in investing in an authentic inclusiveness process? How does inclusiveness allow an organization to meet its mission more fully? How do intentional and unintentional actions in this area impact our ability to provide effective services? Join us for a highly interactive and thought provoking session where participants will explore these and other fundamental questions essential to building organizational strength and sustaining a culture of inclusiveness. Plan early, space will be limited to help facilitate a highly interactive session!

Closing the Grocery Gap: Health at Every Checkout
Many Colorado communities lack adequate access to grocery stores, making it difficult for people to get healthy, affordable food. Research shows that proximity to grocery stores helps people eat more fresh food. Ensuring access to fresh, healthy food is a critical component to a multi-pronged approach to fighting our country's rising obesity epidemic, as well as providing needed jobs and economic development. This discussion will focus on an innovative approach to bridging the equity gap and enticing supermarket operators to locate in underserved areas or providing a boost to existing stores to improve or increase the availability of fresh food.

Facilitator:
Cameron Bertron – Vice President of Development Services, EFG Brownfield Partners

Participants:
Jeff Brown – President and CEO, Brown's Super Stores and UpLift Solutions
Clarence Jones – President of the Board, Walsh Community Grocery
Brian Lang – Director, Supermarket Campaign, Food Trust

Rising Healthcare Costs: Solutions for Sustainability
Healthcare costs have been rising at two to three times inflation and are making the public entitlements of Medicare and Medicaid fiscally unsustainable. Colorado has the seventh highest health care costs in the nation and spends almost $1.6 billion on Medicaid, representing 21 percent of the total general fund. Many individuals and families simply cannot afford health coverage or face significant obstacles in accessing adequate care. To provide more cost-effective high quality care, Colorado has implemented a number of payment reform strategies, including patient-centered medical homes, accountable care organizations, global payment, and other approaches to align payment and incentives.

Morning Session
Does Health Live In Your Zip Code?
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that 90 percent of health is influenced by the "social determinants"– the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. Yet in the United States, only a nickel of every health care dollar is spent on preventive efforts, which could address these factors. In paving the way for a healthier future, how do we engage city planners, community leaders and others in making health a shared goal and value? Learn how communities are being transformed from the former mean streets of Braddock, Penn. to a rural church in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.

The Workforce Future is Now: Team-Based Care
How will access to quality, cost effective care be ensured for everyone in the future? Team-based primary care offers the potential to dramatically improve the quality of care at a lower cost while tackling the question of how to better utilize our health care workforce. Projected health care workforce shortages, combined with a growing interest from payers to bundle payments and the push toward accountable care organizations has fostered continued discussions on team-based primary care. This interactive session will explore the opportunities and challenges with team-based primary care from the perspective of health professionals working in a care team model. The discussion will also explore training and retention of health care professionals to create a new generation of health professionals who are capable of working in efficiently functioning teams.

Healthy Places: Equitable Communities as a Shared Value
According to the 2011 Colorado Health Report Card, Colorado's obesity rate rose from 19 to 22 percent between 2010 and 2011. With the increase, Colorado lost the distinction of being the only state in the nation with an adult obesity rate lower that 20 percent. Solutions are complex and require all sectors to work together. Research has shown that where people live, work and play can significantly impact their health. Attend this session to learn about efforts aimed at building communities that support healthy lifestyles and how to connect with other sectors in the movement to combating obesity.

The Colorado Health Benefit Exchange: A Roadmap to Accessible and Affordable Coverage
Uninsured and low-income people experience significant disparities in health care access and health outcomes. This panel discussion will provide an overview of progress on Exchange implementation to date and explore different perspectives on how the Exchange can and should work to increase access to adequate and affordable health coverage for Coloradans.

The "Me" Factor: Making Health the Default choice
Personal responsibility in health has become a question of balance and proportion. Should people be expected to "go it alone" when it comes to managing their health? What is the role of government and the community when individuals cannot act on their own behalf due to lack of income, education and access to resources? In an age of mass media and instant gratification, how do we get people to pay attention and make better health a priority? This thought-provoking session examines the role of personal responsibility and communities in influencing the choices we make with our health.
