Senior Program Officer

Michael H. Smith is a Senior Program Officer with a strong background in urban planning, community development and policy. With five years of experience in philanthropy, he is committed to advancing health equity and racial justice.

In his role at the Foundation, Michael seeks to leverage its resources to champion health equity in collaboration with individuals, organizations and communities across Colorado. His responsibilities include grantmaking, providing technical assistance, engaging with communities, and developing and implementing strategies. He also plays a key role in the Foundation’s Advocacy priority, and Locally-focused Work, working closely with partners in Morgan County to advance their vision of health equity.

Michael’s commitment to the Foundation’s mission is rooted in his desire for a world where everyone has the opportunity to experience good health and well-being. Through his work, he has the privilege of collaborating with diverse communities across Colorado to understand their unique perspectives and invest in initiatives that promote their vision of good health.

Although relatively new to Colorado, Michael has already developed a deep appreciation for the state. His healthiest habit is his willingness to adapt and embrace spontaneity, recognizing the importance of going with the flow. When it comes to guilty pleasures and leisure time, he finds enjoyment in watching Formula 1 and indulging in reality TV, both of which captivate him with their dynamic narratives.

Rocky Mountain National Park holds a special place in Michael’s heart as his favorite Colorado tourist attraction. He relishes exploring the park’s natural beauty and engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking and swimming. His favorite season in Colorado is summer, as it provides excellent weather for outdoor pursuits.

Michael believes life is good when he can sit at the beach, sipping a cold drink with no obligations. He enjoys spending quality time in his backyard with his husband, grilling delicious food and playing fetch with their two dogs. He also has a passion for trying out new restaurants, going hiking and watching movies at Alamo Drafthouse. Additionally, he is an avid supporter of his alma mater, the University of Virginia, particularly the UVA basketball team, and always welcomes conversations about their games.
